Sometimes nipples never protrude
properly when the breast is maturing during puberty & tend to remain
retracted. This is,
obviously, an innocent situation but if – as a new finding – a
nipple starts to retract, it could be due to an underlying cancer &
will need attention. There
are also a number of innocent (benign) causes for nipple retraction but
cancer needs to be excluded by the usual procedure of clinical
examination & investigation (mammography etc.)
